The TWU International was founded in April of 1934 by its first President, IRT clerk Mike Quill. On May 14, 1937, the Union was Chartered by the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO). In its original form, the Constitution was adopted at the First National Convention, held October 4-8, 1937.

On July 13, 1998, the Transit Supervisors Organization was officially chartered as TWU Local 106.  TWU International President, Sonny Hall presented the Union with its official charter on that day.
