Comptroller DiNapoli has consistently demonstrated the independence, fiscal discipline, and professional oversight necessary to protect New York’s public pension systems and the retirement security of working men and women. His leadership stands in sharp contrast to the failures seen in other major cities.
Chicago serves as a cautionary tale. There, decades of insufficient funding, poor investment returns, and unsustainable pension decisions have left city pension funds only 25 to 40 percent funded, with more than $35 billion in unfunded liabilities. The result has been painful budget shifts away from essential public services, higher borrowing costs, and mounting pressure for drastic reforms—burdens that ultimately fall on workers and taxpayers alike.
New York has avoided this fate in large part because of strong, independent comptroller oversight and a commitment to responsible pension funding—values Tom DiNapoli has upheld throughout his tenure. He has been a steadfast defender of defined-benefit pensions, transparency, and long-term fiscal responsibility, ensuring that today’s obligations are met without gambling with tomorrow’s retirements.
In the upcoming Democratic primary, Comptroller DiNapoli will be challenged by radical left-wing opponents whose proposals risk politicizing the Comptroller’s office and undermining the careful, professional stewardship required to safeguard New York’s finances and pension systems. At a time of economic uncertainty, New York needs experience, independence, and proven judgment—not ideological experimentation.
