One Pass FAQs

What is the MTA One Pass?
The MTA One Pass consolidates employee credentials onto a single card for transportation on MTA services, swiping in/out at timeclocks, accessing MTA work locations, and using secured printing. Once distributed to employees and fully activated, One Pass will replace your current employee ID and employee transportation passes for the following based on your current credentials:

  • Transportation on MTA subways and buses, including express bus for those who have express bus privileges. One Pass is built with Tap-and-ride technology.
  • Transportation on Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad for employees who have riding privileges on either railroad.
  • Access to MTA buildings and work facilities where employees have reporting privileges.
  • Swiping and scanning in and out at time clocks.

Why are we transitioning to One Pass?
One Pass enables us to eliminate the multiple MTA cards and passes employees currently use and consolidate them in a single, secure card. In addition, with the phaseout of MetroCard, employees will also need to use the Tap and ride technology on subways and buses. All employees using MetroCard will be able to continue to use it until you get your One Pass.

When will I receive my One Pass?
You will receive your One Pass based on your paying agency’s schedule below.

When will we begin using One Pass in place of MetroCard?
If your transportation privileges include NYCT subways and buses, you should immediately use your One Pass for Tap and ride as well as facility and building access. Employees who have not yet received One Pass can continue swiping MetroCards until you receive One Pass.

When will we begin using One Pass for Long Island Rail Road or Metro-North commutation?
Once you receive your One Pass, please begin using it on LIRR and MNR immediately (if your current transportation privileges include either of them). Your One Pass has a circle with the railroad name (LIRR or MNR) displayed at the bottom of the card according to your current transportation privileges.

If you haven’t received the One Pass yet, you can continue to use your current railroad pass. LIRR and MNR have both extended the expiration dates of the current railroad passes.

I have my One Pass. Should I use it to swipe in and out at time clocks?
Employees paid by MTA Bus Company ONLY: Use your One Pass to swipe in and out at time clocks. If you have not yet received your One Pass, please notify the Pass Office at OnePass@mtahg.org.

Employees paid by HQ/C&D, NYCT and MNR: Do not use One Pass at time clocks. Continue using your current transportation/commutation pass. Although you might get a “green light” signal, your time/attendance will not be recorded. You will receive notification about when to start using One Pass at time clocks.

Employees paid by LIRR: Do not use One Pass at time clocks. Once you receive your One Pass, you are required to enter your IBM/employee ID # to clock in and out each day (select “Clock In-Out” on the home screen and then follow prompts to finger scan). Your current pass will be collected at the time you receive your One Pass

Employees paid by B&T: When One pass distribution begins at your agency, you will receive notification about when to start using it at Time Clocks.

What should I do if my building access isn’t working on One Pass?

Report the issue to MTAAccess@mtahq.org. Be sure to include your BSC ID and attach an image of the front and back of your One Pass. Please clearly state the facility location and floor(s) you need to access.

What should I do if my One Pass isn’t working for Tap and ride?

Report the issue to OnePass@mtahq.org. Be sure to include your BSC ID.

What should I do if my One Pass doesn’t reflect my Railroad commutation?
Report the issue to OnePass@mtahq.org. Be sure to include your BSC ID.

I am out on leave. When can I get my One Pass?
Contact your agency’s pass office as soon as you are back at work for information about receiving your One Pass.

I will be retiring soon. When will I get my retiree One Pass?
If you retire prior to receiving your One Pass, we will contact you post-retirement with instructions on how to pick up your retiree One Pass. Please direct retiree inquiries to the One Pass inbox.

Will the MTA One Pass eliminate all other passes?
Not entirely. MTA has a population of employees required to carry and/or possess special certifications, licenses, or notification cards such as the DNO (Do Not Operate). Those cards are distinct to their governing body or entity and will remain separate from One Pass.

What should I do with my current pass(es) once I have my MTA One Pass?
Employees of all agencies except LIRR: While we are in the process of transitioning to One Pass for transportation, timekeeping, and facility access, be sure to hold on to all your current passes You will be asked to turn them in once the transition is completed. LIRR employees will turn in their current passes upon receipt of their MetroCard.
